Information about the Event:

The Gastein Perchtenlauf has been documented since the 14th century, making it one of the oldest traditional events in the province of Salzburg.

The Perchten procession in Gastein always takes place over 2 days from January 1st to January 6th. Approximately 160 people participate, including about 30 mask wearers. Each day, the Perchten walkers cover a distance of 12 to 14 km over approximately 10 hours. The masks weigh up to 50 kilos and can reach a height of up to 2.5 meters - a tremendous effort!

In 2011, the Gastein Perchten were recognized by the Austrian UNESCO Commission as part of Austria’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Every 4 years, this tradition can be admired in the Gastein Valley!
