My Gastein experience
You can simply swap grey clouds for golden moments of wellness, culture and exploration. The Gastein bad weather activities offer something for everyone – from fun adventures for children to peaceful, restorative experiences for adults.
When the weather turns grey, you can look forward to pure relaxation at Gastein’s two thermal spas. At Alpentherme, you’ll enjoy expansive thermal pools with views of the High Tauern mountains, a modern sauna world, and a lively family area featuring adventure slides and a swim-in aquarium. Built directly into the rock, Felsenthermeblends alpine architecture with ultimate comfort. Surrounded by stone, glass and light, you float in soothing thermal waters while watching the clouds drift by outside – all from the cosy warmth within.
Gastein is rich in stories – and many unfold best indoors. At the Gastein Museum at Grand Hotel de l’Europe, you’ll journey through the fascinating history of the valley’s spa culture and vibrant past. Montanmuseum Altböckstein offers a glimpse into the region’s centuries-old mining traditions, while art enthusiasts can explore Atelier Bergner or browse charming galleries in Bad Gastein. The perfect way to spend a rainy day discovering something new!
Rainy days are also made for indulging in Gastein’s culinary delights. In cosy restaurants and inviting cafés, hearty regional dishes and homemade pastries warm both body and soul while the weather outside puts on a show.
The motto: Slow down, savour every bite and soak up the genuine warmth of Gastein hospitality.
Even when the sky is grey, there’s plenty to explore in and around the Gastein valley. Weatherproof destinations offer fascinating insights and unique experiences. Entrische Kirche cave in Klammstein, for instance, is a natural wonder filled with stalactites and mysterious rock formations. At the Hausebengut mountain distillery in Bad Gastein, you can watch how fine brandies and liqueurs are made – and even enjoy a tasting. Thanks to excellent transport connections, day trips to the Eisriesenwelt ice caves in Werfen or Mozart’s birthplace in Salzburg are easy to arrange by car or public transport.
The weekly program for families offers creativity and excitement with craft workshops and other engaging indoor activities. A visit to one of the thermal spa or the covered riding hall at Reitclub Gastein can quickly turn a grey day into a highlight.
Another favourite: the adventure arena in Bad Gastein, where trampolines, pedal go-karts and other attractions guarantee laughter and action. And if the clouds part? Countless outdoor adventures are waiting just outside!
If it rains, the Gastein thermal baths, the Gastein healing cave, the Gastein Museum, cafés and restaurants are all great options. Excursions to the Entrischen Kirche church or Klammstein Castle are also possible.
Yes, families will find thermal baths, handicraft workshops, indoor riding offers and the Gastein adventure play hall in Gastein. There are trampolines, pedal go-karts and inline skating, among other things.
The Gastein Museum shows the spa, cultural and local history of Bad Gastein. In addition, the Altböckstein Mining Museum and the Miners' World offer insights into historical mining.
Suitable excursion destinations include the Entrische Kirche church, Klammstein Castle, the Eisriesenwelt Werfen and cultural destinations in Salzburg. Many of these can easily be planned as a half-day excursion .
