The Tauern line between Salzburg and Villach, one of Austria's most important Alpine connections, will be extensively modernized in the coming years.
A central component of these measures is the renewal of the Tauern Tunnel and the modernization of the Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein stations.
This work will not only increase comfort for travelers, but also promote environmentally friendly and CO₂-saving travel and make the railroad even more attractive for all holidaymakers.
The stations in Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein are being extensively modernized to increase comfort for all passengers. Modern monitors, improved loudspeaker systems and optimized lighting ensure safety and up-to-date passenger information. In addition, the Park&Ride facilities are being expanded to make sustainable travel to the Gastein Valley even more attractive.
The redesigned station forecourts facilitate the transition to public transport and offer a pleasant arrival and departure.
There are three train stations in the Gasterinertal: Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein. The ÖBB Transfer Shuttle takes you directly to your accommodation. Alternatively, there are regular buses and cabs available - most stops are right in front of the train station. Many accommodations also offer hotel transfers.
With the Guest Mobility Ticket, you can travel free of charge on public transport from the Salzburg border to Gastein - and throughout the valley (e.g. by bus or ski bus).

Yes, ÖBB regularly offers inexpensive Sparschiene tickets (e.g. Vienna - Gastein from € 24.90). The Einfach-Raus-Ticket for groups or the Bayern-Ticket in combination with local transport to Salzburg are also popular options. It's worth booking early - the low-cost tickets are subject to availability.
Bicycles and skis can be carried on many trains. You will need a separate ticket for this. We recommend checking the ÖBB or DB website in advance to see whether a reservation is necessary. Luggage services such as the ÖBB door-to-door service also accept sports equipment.
All three train stations in the Gastein Valley are currently being converted into barrier-free stations with ramps, lifts and - depending on the station - assistance for passengers with limited mobility. If required, please contact the railroad mobility service in advance.
Most Railjet trains and Intercity trains have free Wi-Fi, power sockets at the seats and spacious seats with tables - ideal for reading, working or relaxing during the journey.
This depends on the departure point. Here are some examples:
Vienna → Bad Gastein: approx. 4:30 h
Munich → Bad Gastein: approx. 3:45 h
Salzburg → Bad Gastein: approx. 1:30 h
Many connections are direct connections without changing trains.
