Closure of the Tauern route for modernization work

The Tauern line between Salzburg and Villach, one of Austria's most important Alpine connections, will be extensively modernized in the coming years.

A central component of these measures is the renewal of the Tauern Tunnel and the modernization of the Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein stations.

This work will not only increase comfort for travelers, but also promote environmentally friendly and CO₂-saving travel and make the railroad even more attractive for all holidaymakers.

Construction phases and replacement services

Due to the modernization measures, the Tauern line will be closed from 18 November 2024 to 4 July 2025. The work will be carried out in three phases.

ÖBB asks all travelers to allow for additional travel time and to pay attention to the current traffic information on the notice boards and in the ÖBB Scotty system.

During the construction work, a comprehensive replacement will be offered so that mobility for travelers is still guaranteed:

Phase I: 18.11.2024 - 02.03.2025

  • Bischofshofen - Spittal-Millstättersee route: direct bus.
  • Schwarzach-St. Veit - Bad Gastein: The train connection in the Gastein Valley remains in place. Occasionally there will be timetable changes or rail replacement services with buses.

Phase II: 03.03.2025 - 27.06.2025

  • Bischofshofen - Spittal-Millstättersee: Direct bus service.
  • Schwarzach-St. Veit - Bad Gastein: Complete rail replacement service with buses.

Phase III: 28.06.2025 - 13.07.2025

  • Route Bischofshofen - Spittal-Millstättersee - Villach Hbf: The direct bus will be extended to Villach.
  • Schwarzach-St. Veit - Bad Gastein: Rail replacement service with buses. Bicycle transport on these buses is limited and only possible with a reservation.
