Coming from Eastern Austria

Your best option is to take the West Autobahn (A1) as far as the interchange in Salzburg. There you will switch to the Tauern Autobahn (A10) in the direction of Villach. When you reach Bischofshofen (Pongau interchange), get off the autobahn and take highway B311 towards Gastein Valley. In Lend, you will leave this road and will have reached Gastein. The B167 is the main road that runs the length of the valley.

Coming via Munich

Coming from the north (via Munich), take the A8 autobahn heading south. After crossing the border into Austria, continue on the A10 autobahn as far as the Pongau interchange (Bischofshofen). Now take the B311 highway to Lend. Here you will find the turn-off for Gastein Valley (B167).

Coming via Innsbruck

Coming from the west (via Innsbruck), drive on the Inntal Autobahn (A12) in the direction of Wörgl. At the exit marked "Wörgl Ost", leave the autobahn and take highway B178 towards St. Johann in Tirol. From there, continue on highway B164 towards Fieberbrunn. When you come to Saalfelden, change to the B311.  In Lend, make a right into Gastein Valley.

Coming from the south on the Tauern Autobahn

If you are arriving from the south (via Klagenfurt, Villach, Slovenia, Italy), take the Tauern Autobahn (A10) as far as Spittal an der Drau. Now you will continue on highways B100 and B106 as far as Obervellach. Here, the B105 will bring you to Mallnitz, where you will be able to take advantage of motorail service operated by Austrian Railways.

"Tauernschleuse" Motorail Service

The so-called "Tauernschleuse" connects Gastein Valley in Salzburg with Mölltal in Carinthia. No matter whether you have planned to use the service in advance, or you decided at the last minute to avoid potential congestion on the A10 Tauern Autobahn: Austrian Railways' motorail service will get you to the Gastein region quickly and safely.

The trains run every 60 minutes, both north and south. The short journey takes just 11 minutes and will be over before you know it.
