Today, a hiking path runs along the remains of the ancient Roman road. “Along the Roman Road” combines history with the present. Hikers can learn interesting information about the flora, fauna, and geological development of the Tauern.
From the Bad Gastein train station, a taxi will take us to the Nassfeld (Sportgastein). Via the nature trail, we will hike through the long basin of this high valley, where traces of former gold and silver mining can be found everywhere. You can also observe grazing livestock on the alpine pastures. After a half hour, you will reach the path that leads up to the Hagener Hütte.
For experienced mountain hikers, this path with numerous hairpin turns and crossings will be easy to manage. You will quickly gain altitude and can enjoy a grandiose view of the Nassfeld valley all to the way to the northern Limestone Alps. Several times, the hiking path crosses the route of the 2,000 year old Roman road. You will even have enough time to enjoy a sip of clear mountain water straight from the source. After 3 hours via the Eselkar, you will reach the Hagener Hütte at an elevation of 2,446 meters, the actual point of the Tauern divide. Both Celtic and Roman coins were found here, which proves that this crossing was used in per-Roman times.
After a relaxing break at the Hagener Hütte, hiking path no. 110 leads over the southern side of the Tauern past the Tauernhaus, which Archduke Johann had built in 1836. To this day, you can still see the natural stone masonry and parts of the vaulted ceiling of the original building. The wide, curvy path will lead us through the magnificent “Tauernmähder” and alpine pastures.
After ca. 2 hours, we will reach the Jamnigalm located at an elevation of 1,745 meters.
From the parking lot near the Jamnigalm, a bus will take us to the Mallnitz train station.
Traveling through the Tauern tunnel, the train will take us on a 20 minute ride back the Bad Gastein train station.
