From gold to health
How a place with large gold chambers became Europe's alpine health region.
In the Middle Ages, unimaginable quantities of gold were mined at the Radhausberg in Böckstein. At that time, Gastein was considered the gold chamber of Europe. In the 1940s, the idea was pursued of driving a tunnel under the ore veins on the Radhausberg and thus once again discovering rich gold deposits. However, no one suspected that the thermal water had probably preceded man. The valuable water, which finds its way up through the ore veins, has dissolved all the ores from the mountain over the centuries. What remains are fine cracks and fissures, through which the radon-containing water vapor rises from the source level into the gallery. Here it heats the rock and causes this unique healing climate.
Miners spared from diseases
Even the miners were largely spared the common colds.
