Bad Hofgastein

The Breyer technology collection in Bad Hofgastein has a broad compilation of antique equipment (radios, photography, office items).

At the Schinderhaus in Bad Hofgastein, you can marvel at technology you can touch. This small, but quite outstanding collection inside historic walls includes gramophones, an Edison phonograph, antique radios and cameras from 1870 to 1960, a “magic lantern” and even a Kelvin Water Dropper. It was put together over several decades by Gastein collector Hans Breyer (1927-1997), who not only tracked the pieces down, but also skillfully repaired them with love for every single detail.
The collection has been open to the general public since 2000 and is very popular with visitors. Located on an exhibition area of around 156 m², in addition to the main focus on audio technology and photography, you will also find many items from the field of domestic and office technology, old tin toys and even an over 300-year-old sextant.
To this day, most of the exhibits are fully functional and regularly operated. Guided tours of the collection are intended, not only to give adults as well as children insights into the fascinating history of technological development, but also to awaken everyone’s play instincts at a number of interactive experimental stations. Eyes gleaming with surprise and astonished looks guaranteed!
