A fantastic but demanding hike to one of our most beautiful mountain lakes with our National Park ranger Roland Friker
Hiking time: 6 hours, 790 Hm in ascent 3.5 h, 790 h in descent 2.5 h
We hike along the mighty Himmelwand and will reach the outer zone of the National Park Hohe Tauern. We turn to the right at "Jägerstein", across the Kötschachbach and take the alpine trail 526 up to Kohlplatzl and all the way to Reedsee at 1.820 m. After a relaxing break at one of the most beautiful mountain lakes we continue the hike up - past Windschursee to Palfnerscharte (2.321 m). The marvellous mountain panorama invites to linger again. Descent to the deep green Palfnersee and further to the mountain station Graukogel, no later than 4:45 to catch the last ride down.
The chair lift operates only in fair weather.
In bad weather the descent is over Palfnerhochalm, Palfnerniederalm to Schachenbauer. This hike takes us above the timber line.
The National Park Hohe Tauern is a natural treasure which is simply waiting to be discovered. Birds can be specified by their song and flight pattern. Sometimes you can spot a wild animal like bearded vultures, griffon vultures or golden eagles, groundhog, chamois, ibex and many more. You can discover geological and botanical features during your hike.
Demanding day trip, ascent about 1.200 m, ankle high hiking boots with treaded sole are absolutly necessary & a good condition is required. Don`t forget a binocular, foto equipment, snack and drinks.
