Farm Summer

The Gastein high mountain pasture summer – to fall in love with

When in summer the heat between the houses in the city becomes unbearable, then there is nothing better than to get out of the city and get up to the high mountain pastures! Here you find fantastic fresh clean air, colourful Alpine flowers and mountain scenery that will take your breath away. There are naturally a number of cosy mountain huts just inviting you to stop and have a rest. This is what a high mountain pasture summer looks like in the Gasteiner Valley.

At the foot of the National Park Hohe Tauern the mighty Gasteiner world rises up. On over 350km of signposted hikes – ranging from family friendly to high alpine – you will discover untouched high mountain countryside, impressive glacier regions, or old gold digger trails from the time when Gastein was the main centre of the European Gold and Silver mining trade. The Gasteiner valley is also famous far across the Austrian borders, as being known as the “Valley of Water”.  This precious element you will find here everywhere you go; in the form of healing thermal spas in the valley, in the deep blue mountain lakes, or in the form of a cascading waterfall. And who knows, you might be able to watch the majestic bearded vulture making his rounds flying over hikers heads, while you rest at the mountain top.

For lovers of romance: Honeymoon in the mountain hut

When the day on the high mountain pastures draws to an end, and the sun goes down behind the Gasteiner mountain world leaving the summits glowing in a fiery red, this certainly increases the heartbeats of romantics. Lovers or newly weds, who want to spend a very special honeymoon, are at

the right place on the Präau-Hochalm in Dorfgastein. The cosy honeymoon suite, freshly made specialities and delicacies, with which the host Monika Rieser will certainly sweeten the honeymooner’s day, are awaiting you. How about an elderberry or blueberry liquor nightcap to watch the sunset? That is pure romance. Information and reservations: Family Rieser, Telephone +43(0)6433/200 59 or +43(0)699/11176366)

On the high mountain pastures – there’s always something tasty to eat…

Be honest: What would a hike through the mountains be without having a hearty snack? Nothing increases the appetite more than exercise in the fresh air. There are approximately 40 mountain huts open most of the year at altitudes from 1,200 to 1,800 metres high. Here the dairy farmers serve tasty specialities which they have made with their own hands: a filling snack with Speck (Austrian smoked cold bacon), cheese and farmers brown bread, served with buttermilk and to follow a home made Pine Schnapps – all served fresh. With specialities served by the mountain hut owners in the Gasteiner Valley such as Kasnocken (a cheesy type of Austrian pasta) Fleischkrapfen (Austrian style ravioli) or a Schott-Suppe (soup containing brown bread and cottage cheese) hikers and walkers gather the strength they need to help reach their goal.

You have a very special chance to watch the making of these delicacies at the Haitzingalm hut above Bad Gastein. Here you can look over Traudi’s, the dairy farmer’s, shoulder while she makes cheese and butter. And because you will also want to know just how this tastes, a delicious cheese snack will be served for everyone. Baking bread is on the programme at the Amoseralm in Dorfgastein, kneed your own dough, form loaves and then bake them afterwards in the wood burning ovens - this work is a lot harder than one would expect. But then the warm self made farmers bread tastes all the better.

Unbelievable summer nights on the mountains

For those people who live with the mountains, these have always been something mighty and mysterious. As old as the tradition of high mountain pasture farming, are the myths and legends, surrounding the giants, ghosts and the hidden treasures in the caves. Find out more about the different legends on a hike at sunset. Immerse in the world of mountain and forest ghosts that haunt Gastein’s high mountain pastures, accompanied by bagpipes and harps. And who knows: perhaps there is a giant trapped in the peculiar shaped rock that you are sitting on while listening?
