When winter sports enthusiasts find themselves out of their depths, then they have either lost control over their skis, or they are on holiday in Gastein. As in the Salzburger winter sports centre, with its three villages Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Badgastein, après ski doesn’t just take place in the mountain huts: Bon vivant’s make their last turn of the day, straight into the one of the two top thermal spas in Gastein. What could be better than after a hard days skiing than relaxing tired muscles in warm comforting water or warming those cold bones in the sauna? The healing effects of Gastein’s thermal waters have been known about for centuries and far outside of Gastein’s borders. Surrounded by water, and rocks, the Felsen Therme Gastein spa with its outstanding architecture, creates a unique atmosphere. One million litres of Thermal water from 17 springs, feed the pools of the Therme. All skiers’ wishes are granted on the more than 200 kilometres of pistes and in the 5 skiing areas. The newly renovated Skizentrum (Ski Centre) in the Anger Valley with many children friendly facilities has proven to be very popular with families. Gastein has invested in expanding the snowmaking facilities for early winter skiers, and for those who love skiing in the sun. That means: superb piste conditions from November until long into spring. Around 90 kilometres of cross country skiing tracks, winter walking paths and many homely mountain huts round off the offer, in the evening a wide range of entertainment is waiting, from traditional cosiness up to jet setting casino fun. The Gasteiner Event Winter 2006/2007: Top Events from December to April
Gastein offers non stop events throughout the whole winter: pretty scary and stunning – the masks of the “Perchten” (disguised winter demons) at the traditional Gasteiner Krampus Run (05. + 06. 12. 2006). The New Year 2007 gets a worthy start at the New Years celebrations in front of the Alpen Therme spa Bad Hofgastein. An absolute highlight for tough winter sports fans is the 2nd Gasteiner Ski Tour Run ((03. + 04. 03. 2007), where high altitudes have to be mastered over a 24 hour period. Here from the 15 – 17 December the best boarders of the world will be fighting against each other in Parallel Slalom and Boarder Cross for hundredths of millimetres. After the hot – cold finals it’s then time again: to “set the night on fire”, when at night in Bad Gastein the Bucheben slope is lit up to day, with 100,000 watts. Snow Jazz Gastein “String Things” (16.03. – 25.03. 2007)The sixth edition of the Gasteiner Snow Jazz Festival will change this holiday region in March onceagain into Austria’s “Jazz Metropolis”. This year the theme of the concerts will be string instruments –under the motto “String Things”. Concerts will be staged all over the skiing area: in the mountain ski huts as well as in especially chosen hotels.
